Belgrade will once again echo with the unmistakable sound of The Sisters of Mercy, as the legendary English band returns to the city after a 13-year absence. Set to take the stage at Hangar (Luka Beograd) on Thursday, July 24th, the show promises an electrifying night of music from one of the most influential bands in alternative rock history.
Formed in 1980 in Leeds by Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx, The Sisters of Mercy began as a modest project between friends who simply wanted to hear their music on the radio. More than four decades later, they’ve become icons. They are pioneers of a genre that blends post-punk grit with dark, hypnotic atmospheres. Their name, borrowed from a Leonard Cohen song, would go on to represent an entire movement in underground music.
Their debut album First and Last and Always (1985) laid the foundation for their unmistakable sound, with Eldritch’s deep vocals, dramatic guitar lines, and the ever-present rhythm of their drum machine “Dr. Avalanche”. With “Floodland” (1987), they reached new heights, releasing genre-defining tracks like “This Corrosion” and “Lucretia My Reflection”. By the time “Vision Thing” dropped in 1990, the band had evolved into a powerful, politically charged force. However, internal conflicts with their record label soon brought their studio releases to a halt.
Still, The Sisters of Mercy never stopped performing. Their live shows have become the stuff of legend. They are moody, intense, and often feature unreleased material that keeps even the most devoted fans guessing. Frontman Andrew Eldritch continues to command the stage with the same enigmatic presence that made the band a cult favorite decades ago.
This summer’s show in Belgrade is more than a concert. It is a rare event for fans across generations to witness a band that shaped the sound and aesthetic of an era. Tickets are already in high demand, and all the details are available here.
Mark your calendars for July 24th and prepare for a night of dark elegance, sonic power, and timeless songs. After 13 long years, The Sisters of Mercy are back in Belgrade. You won’t want to miss it!
