Release date: February 28th, 2025

From the depths of Berlin’s electronic underworld emerges Blutengel’s latest offering “Dämonen:Sturm”, an album that lures the listener into a realm of gothic splendor, shadowed emotion, and pulsating beats. Chris Pohl, the unwavering helmsman of this darkly enchanting ship, once again demonstrates his uncanny ability to sculpt soundscapes that are both ethereal and devastatingly immersive. With Ulrike Goldmann by his side, the duo continues to weave intricate harmonies that resonate with spectral elegance.

Blutengel’s music, often branded as dark pop, transcends such a simplistic label. The album is an amalgamation of EBM, synth-pop, and gothic influences, seamlessly fused into a sonic tapestry that pulses with nocturnal energy. The interplay of electronic textures with Pohl’s deep, evocative vocals and Ulrike’s crystalline timbre crafts a mesmerizing dichotomy that is both alluring and foreboding, as well as delicate yet commanding.

The album unfolds like a grand opera of the damned, divided into three distinct movements. The first segment of “Dämonen:Sturm” introduces us to a narrative drenched in spectral melancholy. It begins with “Dämonen (Prologue)”, a brooding prelude that sets the stage for the storm that follows. Tracks like “Der Sturm” and “She Wears Black” pulse with a relentless rhythm, conjuring visions of dimly lit dancefloors where lost souls sway in synchrony. Meanwhile, “Angst” and “False Gods” strike a balance between introspection and defiance, delivering hauntingly poignant lyricism that speaks of inner turmoil and existential reckoning.

The second part of the album ventures further into the abyss, revealing instrumentals like “Empire of Blood”, which throb with a dark majesty, and collaborations such as “Nothing Left” featuring Solar Fake, an electrifying union that heightens the album’s emotional intensity. Tracks like “Remembrance” and “Fight the Demons” delve into themes of perseverance and redemption, underscored by a pulsating urgency that refuses to be ignored.

Finally, the third segment transforms these compositions into orchestral and acoustic renditions, stripping them to their raw emotional core. “Reunited”, “I Will Surrender” and “Wir” take on an almost sacred resonance, proving that beneath the electronic sheen of Blutengel’s sound lies an undeniable depth of feeling. These versions are hauntingly beautiful, revealing a vulnerability that lies at the heart of the band’s dark aesthetic.

While “Dämonen:Sturm” achieves near perfection in its sonic execution, one cannot help but wonder how much more immersive it could have been had all the lyrics remained in German. The guttural weight of the language lends itself effortlessly to the themes of the album, and though English expands accessibility, it sometimes lessens the visceral impact that German so naturally provides.

Nonetheless, “Dämonen:Sturm” is a triumph. It is an intoxicating journey through darkness and light, chaos and serenity. Once it finds its way into your playlist, there’s no exorcising it. Blutengel has, once again, ensnared us in their exquisite web of gothic euphoria, and we are more than willing captives. So step into the dark abyss of the album and let it take you on a dance with demons. There’s no need to RSVP because your soul is already on the guest list the moment you press play. The storm is rising, the shadows are watching and the beat is to die for!

I was born in Zagreb, Croatia, a long time ago – so long ago that my first camera probably had a crank! Even as a child, I was obsessed with details, turning our cats into reluctant supermodels and forcing family members into dramatic portraits that nobody asked for. In high school, I found the human equivalent of my childhood cats by photographing metal bands, which earned me the nickname that weird girl next door. Despite being named one of the top ten “Women Behind The Lens”, my keen eye led me to a master’s degree in accounting and finance. By moving to Germany, my weirdness has finally found its niche somewhere between tax regulations and flying drumsticks!
