Athens, Greece-based avant-garde funeral doom outfit, Föhn, is preparing to release their debut 2xLP, “Condescending”, on August 23rd through Hypaethral Records in North America and These Hands Melt in Europe, today unveiling the record’s cover art, track listing, preorders, and a lyric video for the sprawling lead single, “Bereft”.
Föhn’s sound transcends traditional boundaries, rooted in funeral doom, drenched in atmosphere, and interwoven with elements of the avant-garde. Drawing from a breadth of influences such as Mournful Congregation, Esoteric, Swans, and Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, the result is a dense, achingly beautiful experience, steeped in the essence of midnight and the whispers of urban life. Their music evokes an enchanting hush, creating a haunting journey for the listener.
Recorded between January ’23 to May ’23 by Babis Tzanidakis and G. Schoinianakis at Timeless Recording Studios in Eleusis, Greece, and expertly mixed and mastered by Greg Chandler (Esoteric) at Priory Recording Studios in Birmingham, England, Condescending promises to deliver a cathartic journey of unparalleled depth and intensity. Föhn invites you to leave behind everything you once knew and immerse yourself in the embrace of this transformative musical voyage.
Condescending’s opening track, “Bereft”, is a nearly fourteen-minute exploration into existential dread, juxtaposing atonal saxophone with glacially slow and immensely heavy guitars showcases their proficient blend of funeral doom with dark, avant-garde jazz.
Föhn’s G. Schoinianakis states:
“It had already started eating alusive, and we couldn’t wait any longer. It hurt a lot and we had to get it out of us. It’s only then when we talk, after all. We knew it would hurt a lot, and in the end, we hoped we would find redemption. A kind of catharsis.”
